For those that wish to examine the actual numbers, the Calculations window allows you to produce the daily calculations for any technical analysis formula in StrataSearch.  You can then use these numbers for examination, verification, or to export into another program.

The formulas in StrataSearch have been produced with the help of the book titled Technical Analysis From A to Z, by Steven B. Achelis.  A companion spreadsheet for this book can also be purchased, which provides formula details in an Excel spreadsheet.  All StrataSearch formulas taken from the book have been verified against the companion spreadsheet.

Using the Calculations window is quite simple.  Follow these steps to produce the daily numbers for the 14-Day Relative Strength Index for symbol AAPL.

Opening the Calculations Window

Entering the Calculation

Calculating and Viewing Results

Opening the Calculations Window

To open the Calculations window, open the Display > Calculations window.

The Calculations window will open with the settings from the last time it was used, so you may initially need to change the Sector and Symbol to those of your choice.  Select [All Securities] in the Sector to display a list of all non-index symbols.

At this time, you should set the Symbol to AAPL and clear the Formula entry if one is already present.  You will then see something similar to the following:

Notice that the Dates, Prices and Volume are all now displaying data for AAPL.  The Calculation column is blank, since the Formula entry is blank.

Entering the Calculation

Place the cursor in the Formula entry, and then click the Builder button directly beneath the Formula entry.

Locate the Relative Strength Index formula, and then enter 14 for the Days parameter.  When you're ready, click the OK button to transfer the formula back to the Calculations window.

The Calculations window is now ready to calculate the numbers.

Calculating and Viewing Results

When you are ready, click the Calculate button, and the values will immediately be displayed.

The 14-Day Relative Strength Index (RSI) values for AAPL are now displayed in the Calculation column.  As you can see, they do not begin until Day 15.  This is because it takes that period of time to seed the RSI, and make sure its values are fully initialized.  In StrataSearch, these are known as Lead-Up Days, and no trading or signals can take place during this initialization period.  If you are using a 200-Day Moving Average, you may need to scroll down after clicking the Calculate button, as the first value in the Calculation column would not appear until Day 200.

If you would like to export these numbers into a spreadsheet for further evaluation, or use in another program, simply click the Export button.  The entire listing will be exported, and the spreadsheet opened.

Approaching the end of the tutorial, you've now seen how StrataSearch allows you to build and evaluate trading systems, and how you can ultimately trade them.  You've seen how to use some of the additional features in StrataSearch, such as the Charts, Screener and Calculations.  Next, we'll go through a list of common questions we receive, hopefully answering any questions you may have.
